How do I gain my 3-4 month old kitten's trust back?

I am feeling very guilty. I started playing with my kitten and soon we started playing in a way that he didn't like. I would twirl him around and do things he was afraid of. I noticed he won't go by me or will not purr when I am petting him. He lost his interest in being my friend. I am sad and might just purchase a different cat and start over. What should I do?
